Foreword

Tolkien: I didn’t want to write this book. I wanted to write about Elvish languages, but everyone said it was a dead-end. So instead I spent 13 years writing this and if you don’t like it that’s your problem.

There are no hidden messages or allusions to WWII and its aftermath in this book - so don’t look for any. I’m just ranting about how much I hate cars, machines and anything modern; I just wish I’d made it longer.
